Normally, the black wires are the “hot” wires. This is the wire that carries the electrical current from the breaker box to the switch or outlet. The plain or green wire is the “ground” wire which is necessary to carry extra electricity back to the breaker then to a rod in the ground outside where it is rendered safe.
