Stair Runners

In the past rug runners were draped over a donkey's back or used at the door steps or to cover an area next to the bed when nomadic tribes were living in tents. They were also used in Persian living rooms to sit on. Over the years, changes in lifestyle have altered the way these types are carpets are primarily used and nowadays you're more likely to see them in hallways, on stairs and in entrance ways. This is because of their ideal shape - on average between 2.5 ft. to 3 ft wide. and 6 ft. to 20 ft. long. However, they can be longer than this or custom made to any size. The ratio (width/length) of a small runner rug might be 3 to 1, whilst, for a larger one, the ratio might be 10 to 1 or more.

Below, and on the following pages, you will find a good selection of 16 to 25 feet lengths suitable for hallways or short stair runners. Click on any of the images for more details. If you need longer amounts of carpet for stairs click on the links for choices from 30 to over 50 feet.

If you're not sure exactly how much carpeting you need, a good rule of thumb for width is to plan for a space of 3-4 inches on either side of the step.

If you have narrow stairs you can create a feeling of increased space by using rods with your stair runner.

Once you have your stair runner in place you will want to take some simple steps to prolong it's life and keep it looking like new. Preventing and removing dirt is the key as soil acts as an abrasive agent which damages the fibers.

Wherever, possible remove your shoes before entering your home and install a door mat to catch as much dirt as possible. Keep other floor surfaces as around your rugs clean and vacuum regularly. If you can stretch to it have your carpets professionally cleaned from time to time.
