Save Money and Help the Environment With Solar Heat

With the constant rise of home energy bills and a concern for the environment, more people are turning to solar power. Solar energy is clean, reliable, safe and best of all it's mostly free - at least once you've recouped the installation costs.

You'll get a refund of the initial cost of installing a solar power system on your energy bill every month. The only other cost that you'll have is for the small amount of electricity that is needed to run pumps that circulate the heated water throughout your system. And if you buy used solar panels you will save even more.

There are two types of solar heating systems, liquid based heating and a system that uses air to provide heat. Both types absorb radiation from the suns rays and transfer it to a storage system the most common being panels.

Liquid based solar heating is usually provided with the use of either water or an antifreeze type solution. Liquid collectors work best for central forced air heating systems and it is possible to incorporate it into your existing system. It's also very effective when used with radiators or radiant flooring. It's the same type of solar heating that is used in solar powered hot water tanks. Heat is either collected with a flat-plate system, concentrating collectors or through tubes. One way to keep the cost down with this type of system is to consider buying used solar panels. Make sure they are still working optimally and are not damaged and you will save yourself a lot in set up costs.

An air based solar heating system has some advantages over the liquid based type. Since it only uses air to provide heat, there's no danger of it freezing and if there's a small leak it's not a significant problem. Air collectors can be used to target a specific room as well as heating your entire home. Collector plates absorb the heat and an electric fan pulls the air out of the room and across the warmed plates. The heated air is then blown back into the room.

The number one use of solar energy in the United States is solar swimming pool heating. Some of the basic systems can be installed for around $100 which makes them a very economical way to heat the water. Low cost plastic collectors are used to absorb heat from the sun. The pool itself serves as the storage system and your existing pump is used to circulate the water. Using solar heat for your above ground swimming pool can save you lot's of money and keep it at a constant comfortable temperature. And, the same process will work perfectly for hot tubs too.

And while we're talking about saving energy outside your home another thing worth considering is solar powered outdoor house lighting.
