Runner Rugs
Runner rugs are a narrow style of rug, generally two to three feet in width, that can fit easily in a hallway or other narrow area. Shorter runners are often six to ten feet in length, although longer ones are available as well. This style of carpet can be found made of many different materials, including indoor/outdoor carpeting, heavy braided rugs, Berber carpet, or even Oriental rugs which may include fringe. In an effort to protect the flooring underneath, these rugs are often used in heavy-traffic areas or places where heavy soiling may be a problem. If being placed over a hardwood, laminate or vinyl floor, a non-slip backing is an important feature to consider as well.

Longer runners can be used to cover a stairway, often using the same
carpeting as that of the areas adjacent to the stairs. Almost any type of
carpeting can be made into a runner rug by having the edges bound which means a
runner can be made to match the mat to be covered.
Shorter runners are very versatile and can fit nicely in any narrow areas where
it is desirable to cover up the flooring underneath. Besides hallways, they are
handy in front of couches or love seats where wear may be a concern. Other
reasons to employ an
area rug runner include helping keep dirt from being tracked into a larger
room or keeping the underneath flooring from developing unsightly paths. By
using a patterned or multi-colored carpet, you can even add a bit of interest
and color to a room.
Be sure to carefully measure the area where you plan to put your new runner. A
hallway may look a lot narrower than it really is, and you don’t want to end up
with too much of the underneath floor showing on the sides of the runner. Length
is also very important as you want to be sure your runner is long enough to
cover the area you want to protect. By considering the area where you desire to
place this style of carpet, you’ll make the right decision when it comes time to
buy and be able to enjoy your new rug for years to come.
