Laminate Flooring

Taking on a home diy project can save you money as well as feeling very satisfying. Decorating a room, assembling a new piece of furniture, or installing new flooring can all be done by anyone with some basic diy skills. It may seem intimidating at first, but with the correct tools and a good step-by-step plan you can take on almost any task about the home.

When you want to update your flooring the first thing to consider is what type of material you want and whether or not you think you're capable of installing it yourself. Depending upon the room, ceramic tiles, carpeting, hardwood or laminate flooring may be appropriate. Trying to lay new carpeting yourself isn’t recommended unless you have prior experience, but installing laminate flooring is within most people's capabilities.

The first step is choosing the color and, to give you some ideas, we have listed below some of the items currently on offer through Ebay. If you don't see anything you fancy, simply click on any of the links to be taken to the main site where you can further search for any specific colors or types you have in mind.

Although most people choose a neutral, lightish shade, you can see from the examples above that deeper colors are also available such as black area rugs. The room's decor should be the deciding factor in determining which hue to go with. Also, remember that lighter colors are more inclined to show the dirt.

When choosing which type of laminate flooing to go for the existing floor should also be taken into account. It's a common mistake to think that in order to change a floor you need to completely remove the old one. With laminate flooring this needn't be the case. You can often place it directly over your existing floor. However, this is not the case in a room that is currently carpeted. If you try and install over that the laminate will not sit properly.

In other circumstances it’s advisable to buy some lightweight foam to lay between the existing floor and the new laminate one. This helps to create a softer feel underfoot and also goes a long way to ensuring a level surface.

Glue or adhesive is often not needed so you don’t have to be worried about harmful fumes or odors. Most laminate flooring these days is tongue and groove. So you won't need nails or screws either. Use a small rubber mallet to tap the pieces into place but be careful about how hard you hit the flooring as it can crack if treated too roughly.

To finish the job install trim around the edges. This usually takes the form of baseboards and you can choose from a color that blends in with the laminate or one that matches something in the room.
