I live in a period house that could really do with some remodeling. I wanted to fix it up, install a new water purification system, and redecorate the whole thing. However, since I didn't have sufficient money to do everything at once, I decided to just start with the kitchen because that room needed the most work. I went to my local library to look for some interior design books and magazines. They were be great resources for ideas, and most contained great before and after pictures that helped me visualize the end result. First of all, the proposed renovations had to be within my budget although I had plans for keeping costs down by buying discount area rugs, for example. I didn't want to spend all my money on one room. And finally, I only wanted to do things that had a functional as well as an aesthetic value. I wasn't just trying to make my place look pretty. I wanted it to be more efficient too.

Once I had these criteria figured out, I settled on two kitchen decorating ideas that fit the bill. After purchasing my materials, such as laminate flooring and contemporary rug runners, and working on the room in my spare time and on weekends, I was able to successfully complete my project in under a month.
