There are few people, who live in the vicinity, who have never shopped at Jerry’s Home Improvement Center. Not compared to the number of people that have shopped at Lowe’s or Home Depot that is. Although Jerry’s offers as many products as its competitors, there is a difference.

There is only one Jerry’s Home Improvement Center and it is independently owned and operated by the original Jerry’s family. Some say it is the largest independently owned hardware store in the U.S.

An Independent Retailer

Over the last few years, many local communities have started to oppose the building of super stores and strip malls. They feel that the big chains squeeze the smaller retailers out of business. And Jerry’s Home Improvement Center has not gone out of business despite competition from new chains.

Sometimes it is very difficult for an independent retailer to match large chains on prices. This is because chains buy in bulk from manufacturers and so have more bargaining power. That means the chains can negotiate lower prices with factories and so are able to sell more cheaply.

Also, many chain stores have sufficient capital to sell what are termed 'loss leaders'. These are goods the store actually sells at a financial loss just to bring customers into their stores in order to get them into the habit of shopping there. Some really big retailers have enough money in the bank sell large numbers of loss leaders over a long period of time and smaller retailers feel that this is unfair as they can't compete.

Also, some claim that large retailers are not as much a part of the community as independent retailers. The management is brought in from other areas and the stores are often built on what was once tree-covered land, making lots of residents angry. Certainly Jerry’s Home Improvement Center shows up on many lists of companies sponsoring local events and their management is active in the community. Even though, their store is as big as any other.

Many people feel comfortable about shopping at a store like Jerry’s where they know the employees and even the management personally. If there is ever a problem they know they can easily talk to the family that owns and operates the whole place and it will be taken care of.
