A Home Improvement Project That Adds Value

There are many diy projects that you might be itching to carry out but unless you plan to live in your current home for a long time, or if cost is not an issue, it makes sense to choose those projects that add value to your home.

Some home improvement projects can even decrease the value of your house? This often happens when you personalize your home so much that no one else wants to buy it or if you install retro elements that takes you back in time rather than being up to date. If you want to make bold statements use something that is not permanent. Black area rugs would be an example. So, if you have home improvement plans in mind, decide a realistic budget and go for those areas which will pay back the time and money of the project and, hopefully, bring you some profit too. One such project is:

Flooring

Fashions change and now people are turning back to solid hard woods with rug runners and laminate flooring like Pergo in preference to carpeting. While carpet was popular a decade ago, now apart from bedrooms, it is no longer in fashion. If you do have some money for home improvement, it makes sense to choose wooden floors. This will increase the value of by making it appealing to todays market who may have allergies and it will save you money in the long run as carpets always get dirty no matter how much you care for them.

Remodeling Estimates

If you ever have a conversation with someone who is in the middle of a remodeling project they often have many complaints. The complaints are usually that the project is taking longer than expected, costing more than expected and is more involved than they thought it would be. Remodeling is never easy, particularly when you are living amongst the construction. But better planning can take some of the pain away.

One way to help take some of the guess work out of a project is to get good estimates before you start - both financial and and in terms of how long it will take. Don't forget to include costs for accessories such as area rugs or more unusual items such as alternative energy sources like solar panels. Then you will have a better idea, before starting the project, how much time and money will be required. If you are financing the project, your lending institution may request a copy of the estimate, anyway, and can even require that you have more than one completed so this make's it even more critical.

Choosing a Decorating Style

There are many approaches to interior decorating and it's useful to research as different styles as possible so that when you are interviewing prospective decorators you know what questions to ask and what things are most important as possible. A poorly chosen decorator can cause a lot of stress and anguish if they end up doing something you don't like and it can be expensive to change things to the way you would like them. So ask plenty of questions when you are considering a decorator and keep in mind the decorating styles you prefer. Also consider the materials you would like. Are you keen on plywood flooring with area rugs, for example, or do you prefer fitted carpeting?

Electrical Safety

If you have young children, or are planning to do some work on your home, you should make sure you are up to date on electrical safety. Even if neither of those apply, you should really know the basics of what you should do, and what you shouldn’t do, in case you are faced with an emergency situation. Do you know what to do if you get caught in a thunderstorm and a telephone pole falls in front of your car? What will all of those loose live wires mean to you?

When you have small children, there may be no time when electrical safety is more important. Because children learn about the world around them by exploring and touching, and this can be big trouble in your home. You have to learn how to keep them safe, and how to teach them about the dangers around them. Electrical safety is not something anyone is born with, and children are most vulnerable to getting hurt.

When an emergency occurs, you have to be prepared. Loose electrical lines are a huge danger, and when the power goes out, you should know what you can do and what you can’t do to repair the damage. So many people think they know what they are doing, and end up extremely hurt because they think they know. Unless you have looked into fixing your electrical box, or what to do with frayed wires, you are asking for trouble.

You can buy DVDs that explain electrical safety in detail, but also in easy to understand terms. You may also find that some community groups will give out these DVDs for free, or may offer classes in electrical safety that you can attend. They do this mostly for awareness, and to try to lower the numbers of people who are killed by electrical power each year.

You can also research electrical safety on your own. You only have to look as far as your computer to get the answers you need. You can find sites devoted to electrical safety, or you can find great articles on the subject. You may also find resources to help you teach your children about electrical safety if you don’t feel you know enough about it to teach them on your own. If you are a new parent, or soon will be, you can find information about how to safety proof your home so your young children don’t end up getting shocked and hurt by open outlets and other hazards.

Consider Your Interior Decorating Style

When you are looking to employ an interior decorator, make sure that you both have the same taste and style in common so the end result will be something that pleases you. If you choose someone that does not share your interests and tastes, or someone that you feel confident can take risks that you will approve of, then your whole decorating project could end up a big disappointment.

The first thing you need to do is decide which of the interior decorating styles you prefer. Are you the kind of person that likes to strip a room down to the studs and start all over or do you like working with what is already in the room? Maybe you have round rugs that you want to keep, for exmaple. Do you prefer dark colors or pastels? Are you someone that prefers an old time look or a more contemporary approach? It is extremely important that you consider as many interior decorating styles as you can so that you know which one you fall under before you start to talking to prospective decorators. Remember that, in the end, you are the client and you need to make sure you get what you want.

Front Porch Design

A front porch designed well can turn a plain looking structure into an impressive home. This home improvement project is worth adding to your summer to do list. A new porch can be designed to suit any style of home and if done correctly it will look like it is an original part of the structure.

My brother purchased an old, run down shack recently, that no one else would touch. We all thought he was crazy and making a bad investment but turns out he knew what he was doing after all.

He is a builder and his first step in improving his house was to start designing a front porch. I am a graphic artist so I drew some rough sketches from his dictation. I added little gingerbread details here and there because I love the traditional look and intricate details and thought it would look more interesting. I planned it to lead in nicely to the hallway where I knew, laminate flooring would be laid.

Three weeks later I went round to visit and to check his progress. The new front porch had completely transformed the house. It looked bigger and very inviting. In fact it looked so pretty, I drove right by without recognising it. I knew that I was on the correct street but I just couldn't believe it was the same wreck that my brother had bought.

A particularly nice touch was the light that he added which was powered by miniature solar panels.
