Cheap and Cheerful Remodeling Ideas

The topic of home do it yourself projects, as witnessed by the number of TV programs dedicated to the subject, is as popular as ever these days, especially in the current economic climate where people are having to think twice before moving home. But maybe even this area will see a downturn as we tackle less luxurious projects and stick to vital repairs that can be afforded. But that doesn't mean we have to give up making out homes look nice.

Sprucing up a room need not cost the earth as there are a number of low cost things you can do. The use of rugs, thoughfully placed, is a good example. Add to that the fact that, with a little effort, you can find cheap area rugs for sale and you stand to make even more savings.

In the kitchen, if you were planning on installing a water filtration system, you can save money by delaying your plans and going for the cheaper option of using a pticher instead, such as those in the Britta water filters range.

Other savings can be made by repainting exisiting kitchen cabinets rather than buying new and by painting walls rather than buying wallpaper.

Solar Power From Windows

One of the challenges of introducing solar power into our homes is the high cost of the initial installation. This can be offset by the savings once panels are in place but, at today's prices, that could take years. Although the increases in electicity, gas and oil bills may mean this timescale is reduced. Also, in countries where sunlight is less bright and less frequent efficiency is decreased. Solar heat is particularly difficult to produce enough energy for.

Recently there has been some work at MIT that may help solve this problem. They've been working on somthing call a solar conectrator which allows a mixture of 2 or more dyes to be painted onto a pain of glass or plastic that absorb light. This light is then passed onto solar cells that are placed at the edge of the glass or plastic.

The idea is that windows could be painted with these dyes, which don't block the passage of light, and energy could be generated from the cells. The scientists claim this method is 10 times more powerful than todays methods of producing energy from sunlight.

Sounds like a great idea to me. What not's clear though is exactly how much it would cost to fit an entire house with these special windows. At the moment the cheapest method seems to be to fit used solar panels but the windows sound like a much better bet for the future.

Keeping Kids Pools Clean

Small swimming pools, designed for young children, are those that come without pumps and filters meaning it's up to you empty and replace the pool's water in order to keep it fresh and safe. They are normally  less than 2 feet in depth. In a larger above ground pool this cleaning more usually happens by way of a filter. 'Splasher' type pools are those with water 2 feet to 44 inches deep and usually contain a mechanical system for cleaning the water.

Kids pools can be great fun for children but they can also be harmful if not used properly. Most people empty and refill them every few days, sometimes every day, depending on their size. It's essential to do this since if you don't replace the water frequently, you run the risk of having your kids play in dirty water. Even if you completely replace the water but don't thoroughly clean the pool, on can end up contaminating the new water when you refill.

Sometimes, therefore, you may want to consider using some of the milder swimming pool supplies you would use in a larger pool but you need to check carefully to make ensure they are suitable, first.

Electric Underfloor Heating From The Bottom Up

In the past couple of decades, electric underfloor heating, also known as a radiant heating system, has increased in popularity in the house construction industry. The simple design of this efficient heating method is truly brilliant, making the most of the simple principal that heat rises. Basically, the heating elements are placed in the floors of the house. No forced air is used in the process of keeping the home comfortable and cozy during the coldest periods of the year. The benefit of below the floor heating is that you are warmed from the feet up. The heat naturally rises making the whole home comfortable.

Down the street there is a prototype home built by a local construction worker who has used underfloor heating. The elements were placed underneath the floor. In this particular house the whole floor is constructed from cement. The elements in the electric underfloor system heat the cement that then spreads heat throughout the remainder of the house.

I was impressed by the simplicity of the idea but I was also surprised by the hard work it took to install it. Cement can often be a bit tricky and it takes a certain skill on behalf of the construction team to make this material work well. Installing the electric underfloor heating units is another task requiring a professional's skills. Evenso, a friend of mine who was building his home from scratch decided to give radiant heat a go in his new home and he's been delighted with the results. The concrete floors would regularly be awfully cold but I was taken aback by how warm the uncarpeted spaces in the new home were.

Rug Runners Uses

The term runner rug usually refers to any rug which is longer in length than its width and can be used in most areas of the house including hallways, bedrooms, kitchens and stairs. Runers can change the look and feel of any space enlivening an area and also protecting wooden or carpeted floors.

Since there is a huge choice of both style and type of rug runner, from small ones for beside the bed to long carpet for stairs, you can save time by conducting research online before buying.  There are hundreds of designs and materials and sizes to choose from some with square ends some with rounded corners from traditional to  customized designs.

If buying a carpet runner to go on a wooden floor consider purchasing a good quality pad as well to go underneath it. This is important not only to hold rugs from slipping but to protect both the floor and the rug itself thereby lengthening its life as well as anything underneath. Some manufacturers actually require high standard rug pads in order to satisfy their warranty requirements.

One you find a supplier you like, at a price you like don't forget to ask about warranties and extra services like delivery.
